The Practice Program for the Northern District of California invites you to a symposium on civil practice issues in our district. The program begins with a panel that will discuss the science behind Implicit Bias and its impact on judicial decision making. The second panel explores the skills and knowledge necessary to address Implicit Bias in the Courtroom. A reception will follow.

Speaker Bios

Christy Chandler
Christy Chandler is Co-Founder of Daylight Justice, which creates innovative, interactive educational experiences for lawyers, judges, court personnel and law enforcement to address bias in the justice system.  Before starting Daylight, Christy worked for over fifteen years as a litigator handling general criminal defense and white collar cases with the firm Arguedas, Cassman & Headley.  She has worked extensively in trial courts and also handled criminal appeals.

Shanti Brien
Shanti Brien is co-founder of Daylight Justice, an education company which teaches police, attorneys, court staff and civic leaders about reducing bias and increasing fairness.  She is also Associate Professor of Practice at the Mills College Graduate School of Business and Public Policy. Prior to teaching, Shanti worked in commercial litigation and criminal appeals for 10 years.

Florence Keller
In 1987, Florence Keller, PhD. was awarded an NIMH post-doctoral fellowship in Psychology and Law at Stanford University, where, from 1989 to 1999, she served as a Visiting Scholar. Since 1990, Dr. Keller has been a principal at the Trial Analysis Group specializing in jury selection, witness preparation, and development of trial strategy.

Julie Mar-Spinola
Julie Mar-Spinola is CIPO for Finjan Holdings, a mediator for CAND for complex IP cases, a member of CAND’s Selection Committee, a member of the USPTO’s PPAC, and a co-founder and Chairperson Emeritus of ChIPs, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing women in technology, law and policy, with a dual purpose of increasing diversity and inclusion in these fields as well as accelerating the progress of innovation that benefits our society.
